Here are our five favourite destinations where you can sun yourself on Christmas day if it takes your fancy.

Canary Islands

Flight time: Around four hours

Who can resist a beach that looks like this? Not us.

Volcanoes, gorgeous coves, sandy deserts and tropical forests abound in the Canaries, where there are a huge range of resorts to choose from. With temperatures rarely sinking below 20 degrees in the winter, it’s the perfect time of year to explore these beautiful isles with the kids. You can also hit one of the many theme parks in the relatively quiet period, with Siam Park in Tenerife often heralded as the best water park in the world.

Cape Verde

From The Cape Verde Experience

Cape Verde is often overshadowed by the tourist-giant of the Canary Islands, but should certainly not be overlooked. With stunning beaches, a whole range of family friendly hotels, horse riding and turtle watching, it’s a winter sun destination worth checking out. And when you do, it won’t be long before you want to dip into those clear blue waters and get a cocktail in your hand…

The kids will love Dubai, with its bright lights, beautiful beaches, deserts and oodles of theme parks to explore. Our favourites are Dubai’s Aquarium and Underwater Zoo – one of the world’s largest indoor aquariums – where brave parents can swim with the sharks, and Aquaventure water park, where the kids can splash to their heart’s content.

Kerala is a stunning destination for families who want to experience something completely different. If you fancy tiger-spotting in the jungle, giving baby elephants a bath or relaxing on one of the area’s traditional houseboats, Kerala is the ideal location for you. It’s a little further afield, but totally worth it.

Flight time: Around 9 hours

Cuba is still a bit like the land that time forgot, with its classic cars, unspoilt beaches and fascinating culture. The kids will love playing in the sandy shallow waters of Varadero beach, getting involved with the traditional salsa dancing or hiring one of those classic cars for a day-trip to the mountains.
