Health Visitors

Health visitors are nurses with extra specialist qualifications who specialise in child and family health and wellbeing. They work with mums, dads, families and carers through your pregnancy up until your child is ready to start school.

Get access to this service

Your midwife will automatically refer you to a Health Visitor. If you move to a new area and register with a GP you will be given a new Health Visitor

How they can help

They can provide advice, support and guidance in caring for your child, including support with:

Becoming a parent and getting to know your baby;
Breastfeeding
Postnatal depression, feeling low or anxious, and other mental health difficulties that some mothers (and fathers) experience during pregnancy and after the baby has been born
Concerns that your child is not developing as expected
Behaviour management eg, sleeping difficulties, potty training and fussy eating
Maintaining a healthy weight and healthy eating
Staying safe and reducing accidents
Managing minor illnesses
Support for parents of children with a diagnosed health condition or disability
Getting ready for school
Quitting smoking.
If you have a child under five and want advice on any health issue, you can ask your health visitor. If they are not able to provide the support, they can make referrals to other services, or give you information on where else to get help.

Child Health Clinics

Regular local child health clinics are available to parents of children from birth to 5yrs old. At these clinics members of the health visiting team are available to discuss any aspect of a child or family’s health and wellbeing (as listed above). Some local clinics also have Breastfeeding Network (BFN) Volunteers working alongside the Health Visiting team. Please check out the BFN website (link https://www.breastfeedingnetwork.org.uk/gosport-and-havant/) for more details.
