Four Essential Apps For New Parents

There’s literally an app for everything nowadays, from the useful to the downright weird (including one called “I Love Potatoes” and another featuring a virtual toilet that you can unblock to your heart’s content. Yes, weird).

And when you have a newborn on your hands, and you’re in the crazy fog of sleeplessness, nappies and breast pads, it’s all too easy to get sucked into buying ANY book or app that promises to make your baby sleep or give you back some semblance of order in your life.

To save you trawling the web at 3am*, here are our Mummies Club app favourites. Sadly, none of these include a definitive instruction manual of how to look after a newborn (wouldn’t it be lovely if such a thing existed?!), but they might make your life a little easier while you’re waiting for the crazy fog to lift.

*To be honest, you may still end up trawling the web at 3am buying every piece of baby equipment known to man, as that’s just part of the territory.

#1 SoundSleeper

We can’t promise that your baby will miraculously sleep through the night when you download this app, but it certainly seems to help. It plays a range of soothing noises to help your baby drift off to sleep – from womb noises to waves. Our little one preferred a rather less relaxing sound – the hairdryer – so we endured many nights of this app blaring out alongside us. But it got the baby to sleep, so that was the main thing, even if I’ll never be able to look at a hairdryer in the same way again…

#2 Map My Walk

This app is brilliant for all of those long pram walks you’ll inevitably do as a new parent to try and get your little one to sleep. It uses your phone’s GPS to track your walks, and even calculates the number of calories you’ve burned, which means that you’ll be able to eat more cake guilt-free. Result!

#3 Kidloland

If you’re anything like us, when you’re faced with a crying baby you instantly forget every nursery rhyme you’ve ever been taught, apart from the age-old classic “Twinkle, Twinkle”. And even “Twinkle, Twinkle” gets a bit old when it’s sung at the top of your voice for the 1000th time.

Enter Kidloland – an app with more than 90 nursery rhymes for you to belt out at the top of your lungs during bath-time. It’s ace because it also includes loads of games and activities for your kids as they get older, and can sing / shout along with you.

#4 Lifecake

This is a lovely app that lets you keep all of your baby photographs and films together and share them with friends and family through a private timeline.

It even tells you how old your wee one was on the day the photograph was taken – so you can coo at their amazing progress to your heart’s content.
