Ok, hands up. Which couple manages to keep to their promise of a regular date night? Yep, as I suspected. All the research says they are crucial in keeping relationships strong and fresh, but I’d be the first to admit that despite every good intentions life just gets in the way.
In my household the warnings signs are easy to spot. Passive aggressive sniping from me about the laundry or the washing up. Grunts from the other side. An innocent reminder that it’s recycling night and could he, perhaps, maybe, take the bin out. And then eventually, a “Hey, maybe you could book a sitter and we can get out – just you and me”. I then spend the next week forgetting to book the sitter, then my other half has a big project on at work, and then one of the kids gets sick and then… Oh look another month has passed.
At Mummies Club we are passionate (excuse the pun) about Date Nights. Let’s face it, family life is a whole lot easier if the parents get to have some down time. Date night is much more fun than couple’s therapy. And cheaper than a divorce.
That’s why Mummies Club and Bills over in Farnham Castle have got together to offer all you lovely couples out there a special date night treat: a FREE bottle of wine with your meals, Monday to Thursday when you present your Mummies Club Lifestyle Card. Just call us your Fairy Godmother (sorry, the glass slippers aren’t available at the moment.)
My other half and I took advantage of this steal of a deal last week and – don’t fall over – we went out. Me and Him. Without the kids. After dark. Revolutionary.
Bills was a perfect location. It has that cool, laid back style similar to a New York restaurant. The atmosphere was lively and informal. The cool interiors. Pinterest worthy shelves, stacked with marinated peppers and good looking jams. As our (first) cocktails arrived (Bramble Mojito for me, Aperol Spritz for him) our banter went from up-tight sniping about domestic priorities, to convivial chats about the year ahead. Planning fun, rather than juggling the childcare and work commitments. The FREE wine helped!
The menu reflects the laid back coolness of the interiors. I opted for Lemon Squid, followed by the BBQ Pork ribs. My other half went for the crispy halloumi starter, then the Duck Pie. All hearty, satisfying and comforting dishes. Puddings were a heavenly Rhubarb and Stem Ginger crème brulee for me and warm cinnamon doughnuts for him. Pushing the boat (and our waistbands) out.
As the evening flowed, we were transformed from the tired almost 40-somethings into the relaxed 20-somethings we once were. Plus the extra wrinkles and grey hair. We’ve been married for 10 years and together for six years before that. ‘Forever’ as our kids would say. We are lucky, we have so much to be grateful for, including a partnership which has survived tough challenges and sleep deprivation. It’s funny how it takes a Date Night to remember this.
