Cut Food Waste And Save Money For Your Family

Have you heard the radio adverts doing the rounds? They talk about the difference between best before and used by dates. As a country we waste 15 million tonnes of food a year, which equates to approx. £700 for a household with children. With organisations like Love Food Hate Waste and The WI getting involved we’ve decided to take a stand as well and pull together some useful tips and tricks to help you cut down on the waste and save some of that precious money!

TIP #1 Use your loaf

Talking from experience I throw away a lot of bread. In our house we either have too much or we’ve run out. The problem is a warm kitchen especially in winter isn’t the best place to keep bread fresh and as a family that does a weekly online food shop that can be a problem. The solution? Freeze whole loaves or slices in small bags or pick up one of the smaller sized loaves from suppliers like Warburtons or Kingsmill.

TIP #2 Invest in a large freezer

If you have the space invest in a large freezer. Freezers are the best way of keeping food fresh and if you plan ahead you can keep all the staples in there, bread, milk etc.

TIP #3 Plan ahead

Ok so we all know this but in reality it’s harder than we think, that’s why Love Food Hate Waste have created a 2 week meal planner to help you out. Packed full of great dishes and a ready to go shopping list there’s really no excuse. Pop on over to their website for more info

TIP #4 Work out the difference.

Best before and use by dates are different. To make sure you know what each one means read one.

BEST BEFORE – These dates refer to quality rather than food safety. Foods with a ‘best before’ date should be safe to eat after the ‘best before’ date, but they may no longer be at their best.

USE BY – These dates refer to safety. Food can be eaten up to the end of this date but not after even if it looks and smells fine. Always follow the storage instructions on packs

TIP #4 Make propper use of your fridge
